The Super Eagles have fallen out of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, after losing 2 to 1 to Argentina in their Group D final game at Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.
Lionel Messi scored the first goal of the match in the first half right before Victor Moses equalized from the penalty spot. Messi’s goal was the 100th goal of this summer’s World Cup.
But almost close to the end of the game, Marcos Rojo scored the winning goal to move Argentina into the last 16.
This win for Argentina was their fifth straight win against Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the World Cup.
The last time the Super Eagles fell out of the group stage was at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Argentina will now join Croatia who beat Iceland 2-1 in the round of 16.
Croatia will face Denmark who finished second in Group C whilst Argentina will meet with France.
Ahmed Musa had the first attempt on a goal for the Super Eagles on eight minutes but his shot from outside went over the bar.
Argentina eventually opened the scoring gate via Messi at 14 minutes into the game, he controlled a long pass given by Ever Banega before shooting it past Francis Uzoho and into the net.
In the 26th minute, a big save was made by Uzoho as he quickly came off his line to prevent Gonzalo Higuian from doubling Argentina’s lead following a defense splitting pass from Messi.
Messi almost made it 2-0 from a free-kick close to the box at 34 minutes but his effort got the slightest fingertip touch from Uzoho and came off the post.
Before the second half begun, the Super Eagles made the first change of the game with Odion Ighalo replacing the minutesctive Iheanacho.
The Super Eagles were back on level terms at 51 minues all thanks to Victor Moses from the penalty spot after Javier Mascherano fouled Balogun inside the box.
At 71 minutes Wilfred Ndidi hit a superb strike outside which it went over the bar.
Ighalo had a chance to put Nigeria ahead at 76 munites of the game, but he hit the ball wide.
