The former President, Goodluck Jonathan has blasted the President of Nigeria, Mahammadu Buhari for his decision to deploy more troops to the South-East, South-South and South-West.
Goodluck Jonathan who was inspirited by the statement made by Senator Bukola Saraki, the Senate President of Nigeria, who said that the military has no right to declare the Indigenous People of Biafra a terrorist organization as it is unconstitutional.
The former President said this in a Facebook post which was signed by Reno Omokari, his Aide on Tuesday 19th September 2017.
His Facebook post stated:
However, we want to advise the Buhari administration, which has announced plans to extend the military show of force to the South-South and the South-West through Operation Crocodile Smile, to tread with caution.
Nigeria is no longer under military rule. In a democracy, you separate the military from the police. The military is not meant to fight criminality within a nation because they are trained to fight a nation’s external enemies.
It is the police that are trained to fight crime internally. When the military starts doing the job of the police and starts fighting or doing what they call a ‘show of force’, the effect will not be to reduce crime. The effect will be to intimidate people.
He also went on to attack the Minister of Information and Culture for accusing him that he has a hand in the IPOB activities and because he lost elections in 2015.
Recall that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said that it is disgruntled politicians and treasury looters that are sponsoring the IPOB group activities.
Jonathan, the former President, went to say:
The insinuations in the press conference given by Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Sunday, accusing the opposition of sponsoring the IPOB and the fact that he mentioned that Nnamdi Kanu preached Nigerian unity during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan is another clear indication that the present administration has not left propaganda mode for proper agenda mode two and a half year into their tenure.
If the government, in which Lai Mohammed serves, knows which opposition members are sponsoring IPOB, then they should identify them, arrest them and then prosecute them
He also commended the South-East Governors for their decision and for restoring peace in the South-East region. He also said that the Minister of Information and Culture have no right to criticize him just because he declared Boko Haram a terrorist group. He also went on to tell him that before he declared Boko Haram a terrorist group, that it followed the due process of the Law and Constitution of Nigeria.
He also stated that since Lai Mohammed said that IPOB group is being sponsored by disgruntled and treasury looters. He wondered if Saraki, the Senate President who is also the member of All Progressive Congress, APC is also among the sponsors of IPOB since he had come open to say the declaration of IPOB group as a terrorist organization is illegal.
He finally advised the Minister to focus more on serving the Nation than following propaganda.
He said finally:
It is our suspicion that Lai Mohammed is talking from history seeing as he criticized the Jonathan government for banning Boko Haram in a statement he released on June 10, 2013, even though the Jonathan government had gone through due process before proscribing that murderous sect. Perhaps Lai Mohammed thinks everybody is like him and those he represents.
