It is easier to watch a movie from the TV screen when the population is watching us, and we tend to find it difficult watching a movie on a phone screen with a large population.
Can you now see why using the TV screen is more important and accessible?
For this reason, new TV sets have been produced and are known as “smart TVs.” These sets of televisions are called smart because of some unique qualities they process, and they perform higher tasks other than just playing in AV and DVD mode.
They are known as smart TV because they can be connected to the internet to stream online on a website like YouTube, Netflix, Netnaija, etc.
Now you might wish to connect your phone to your TV to watch some content, view some files and do some rad on your phone using the TV.
You have to learn the connection processes. Although an HDMI cord is used mainly in this situation, you can use other better methods to connect your phone to a TV without an HDMI. Sometimes HDMI serves as a hindrance and can be tiring.

1. Using USB (Universal Serial Bus) Cable
The most common cable used by smartphones is the USB cable, and this is because it is easier to connect with laptops and other gadgets. Not all TVs have a USB port.
If your TV doesn’t have a USB, you can not use this method, but if it does, congratulations, you can use this method.
Therefore, you can connect your phone and TV by using the USB.
Once the TV supports the connection, you can go further to watch contents and view files from your phone to your TV.
Just like it happens on your desktop and laptop, you should be able to. Follow this step to connect your phone to the TV using a USB cable
- Go to “Source” on your TV screen and choose the USB option.
- You will receive a notification on your phone screen letting you choose the “transfer files” option, not the “charging” option.
- Choose the transfer files option to display your files on the screen.

2. Screencasting
Casting is an act of displaying contents from your phone, tablet, or other devices to a TV. It permits you to watch movies, shows, and other forms of content from the source device – which, in this case, is your phone.
Various famous streaming services, such as Hulu and Netflix, support screen casting; however, many other applications do not possess the “cast screen” feature, and screen mirroring is an alternative in such a situation.

The challenge of using screencasting is that t does not support faster speeds. So, if you’re a type who plays media faster than 1x, it’s not possible with Chromecasting.
3. Using Screen Mirroring
As the name implies, mirroring. It also shows whatever is displayed on the phone on the TV in a replicate format.
Mirroring is for apps that do not possess casting features, and your phone also has to support mirroring. If it does, congratulations, you can go ahead to connect with your television.
Almost all android phones support mirroring. In other to mirror your phone screen onto your TV in Android, here’s a step to follow:
- Install the “Google Home app” on your phone.
- In the app, go to Account, then Mirror Phone/Device
- Click Cast Audio/Screen to get started.
Note: Some modern Android devices already have Google Home, while some phones may have their app to allow screen sharing.
The challenges with screen mirroring lie in replicating your phone’s behavior. For instance, if your phone’s screen got blackout while connected to your TV, your TV screen would blackout too.
However, you can solve this by setting your phone to stay awake when connecting to a TV, which may drain your phone battery faster when set this way.
Also, when you mirror your phone, you will not be able to use it for something else, and you can’t perform two things together on the phone when mirroring with the TV.
Unlike mirroring on casting, the case is different and better. You can multitask on your phone while the casted content is still displaying on the TV screen.
While watching content on the TV, you can use your phone for other things such as browsing, texting, calling, and so on.
4. Cast With Google Chromecast
You can use this and connect your phone to your TV if your television supports the usage of Google Chromecast.
Note that chrome cast does not support all software/ applications. It supports applications such as Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, Google Photos, etc.
How to connect your phone to your tv using Google Chromecast
- Make sure you connect your phone and TV to the internet, either From wifi or other means of data connection.
- Once the network is connected, choose the application you wish to cast.
Note that not all apps support Chromecasting, so we use mirroring in this situation.
You don’t have to worry if your phone supports Chromecasting. Both android and iPhones support Chromecasting.
Once you connect your phone to the internet, you can control the content you’re watching with your phone at ease.
5. Using Airplay for iOS
The Airplay function only works with apple to apple devices; if you use an iPhone and a TV from the apple model, you can also use Airplay.
Airplay allows you to cast contents from your apple phones to your apple televisions.
Unfortunately, you can’t use Airplay for non-apple devices.
If you use an iPhone and just an ordinary smart TV that isn’t apple as well, you can not cast contents from your phone to your tv. And vice versa.
It only works between Apple devices such as iPad, TVs, iPhones apple laptops.
How To Use The Airplay For Casting
- Connect the device you’re using for casting, either an iPhone, an Apple laptop, or an iPad, to the Apple TV with a data connection.
- Once they are connected, there will be a notification on both devices for permission.
- You can proceed to choose the Airplay connection on your apple phone.
Fortunately, you can cast contents from your apple phone to your Apple TV and still wander around without worrying about connection interruption because apple technology is substantial in terms of connection.
As perfect as the Airplay option is, it also has its challenges. Although this is not much of a big deal to some people, to some, it is.
The challenge with Airplay is that you cannot increase the volume or the speed more than 1x.
6. Using Miracast
Miracast is a suitable method that we can use to cast and display photos or videos from phones, laptops, and iPads to televisions without using the HDMI cable.
With Miracast, you can wirelessly connect devices with television without any interruption.
Miracast is employed for screen mirroring. Therefore, you can not multitask on your phone while displaying content from your phone to the television.
Miracast does not support casting, and it is strictly for mirroring alone. Do not confuse the suffix “cast” on the name Miracast.
7. Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)
Almost all smart TVs support the DLNA pattern of casting, and it enables connection from any device to the television.
Note that you cannot use DRM in the media files you want to stream, or it will limit your streaming content. For instance, it does not support Netflix.
